Alessandro Bavari – in the belly of the beast
Metachaos, Bavari’s award-winning multidisciplinary short film, is an attempt to illustrate the “most tragic aspects of human nature”: war, madness, hatred. It’s an eight-minute visual cacophony of amorphous frenzy containing jarring moments of serenity. Using a ‘chamber flicker’ to spasmodic effect, the image is unnerving yet captivating, its poignancy indescribable – all set against the menacing strains of industrial machinery, the sound of goose-stepping, the wind, the crackling. It’s a sensory purgatory.

Alessandro Bavari is a video artist based in Italy. He studied scenography, photography and history of art at the Academy of Fine Arts, in Rome. He uses digital manipulation in his art, as well as incorporating industrial and organic products from nature in the photographic process and computer digitalization, which leads to “a kind of contamination among the arts dissolving the boundaries which distinguish them”.
